WOOD CARBONIZATION PLANT WITH ENERGY USE OF PYROLYSIS GASES

Objective

To demonstrate at industrial scale the production of charcoal from biomass residues with an innovative partial recycling of pyrolysis gases, as well as the economic viability of such a plant. The payback time foreseen amounts to
5 years.

12 400 t/yr of wood logs and residues are cut into wood chips, predried to 15 % moisture content and fed into an horizontal carbonization unit working at 500 C.
Part of the pyrolysis gases produced are recycled and burned before crossing and heating the thin horizontal layer of wood chips in the carbonization chamber. The excess of pyrolysis gases is burned to provide hot gases for wood drying and steam for a nearby factory. This scheme allows the cracking of the tars contained in the pyrolysis gases and no polluting condensates are produced. The plant will treat 12 400 t/yr of wood to produce 2 192 t/yr of coarse charcoal and 98 t/yr of fines as well as 1 055 toe of gaseous combustible during 8 040 h/yr.
The charcoal is stored prior to packaging.
