RE-USE OF RESIDUAL BIOMASS OF FRUIT-TREES PRUNING

Objective

The aim of the project is the organization and demonstration of a cycle for picking and transforming the fruit-trees pruning residues in order to make easier their re-use for thermic energy production . Annual energy recovered is about 867 toe and payback time is 3 years.

The cycle of harvesting-transforming and briquettes making of fruit -trees pruning residues (1,2 t/ha), concern an area of 3. 200 ha
. The pruning residues are side-delivered between the tree rows to increase the working capacity of the baling machine; the bales are left of the field surface where a bales picker-loader picks up and loads them in a large case placed on is back-side. Using this machine the bales are transferred to the collection centre where ,after a short period of time, the biomass is conditioned.
The conditioning process begins with the residues size reduction by an hammer-mill. After the milling, the biomass is artificially dried in order to reduce the humidity of the wood below the 15 % . At the end of this process biomass is densified in structures, called briquettes, of 1200-1400 kg/m3 in density. The last operation is the briquettes packing to make easier the commercialization. This cycle is realised using the following machines:
1 rake-machine, 2 picking/bales making machines (one for low -density bales and the other for high-density ones), 1 bales picking loading machine, 1 hammer-mil for reducing biomass particles size, 1 drum-drier for drying milled biomass, 1 briquettator for transforming the biomass in high density structures (briquettes).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
