Objetivo
The aim of the Project is to demonstrate a new energy and environmental concept for a combined biogas and compost plant for organic waste.
The concept is based on the following principles :
- Minimization of energy consumption for the process in order to optimize the outcome of energy.
- Minimization of loss of nutrients during the process.
- Optimization of energy output and recycling of nutrients in the same plant.
- Maximization of recycling through minimization of the content of heavy metals in the compost and a general minimization of residues through source segregation of the waste.
The project will result in construction of the Biogas Compost Plant with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes per year. The project also include experiences gained in the first two years of the operation.
Additionally, results from the necessary source separation collection system for household waste will be presented.
The Project includes planning, design and construction of a biogas Compost Plant for annual treatment of 10,000 tonnes of waste. The extracted biogas will be utilized for production of heat and power. The produced compost will be used as soil conditioner/fertilizer of high standard. To reach the ultimate recycling, the plant will collect and utilize nutrients in the waste. The energy output will be a biogas production corresponding to 28,270 GJ/year (7,859 MWh/year), which through the gas motor will be converted into 8,905 GJ/year (2,475 MWh/year) of electricity and 15,405 GJ/year (4,285 MWh/year) of heat.
The Project will have a innovative character as an environmental adapted waste to energy plant. The following innovative elements can be emphasized :
- Full scale combined biogas and compost plant based on further development of the wet, mesophile process.
- The combination of biomass sources :
a) Source segregated household waste of high quality.
b) Selected organic waste fromindustries.
- The rigorous demands to be produced compost in environmental and qualitative terms (demands to content of heavy metals, residues etc.).
- The implementation of the biogas and compost plant in an integrated waste management system including recycling, incineration and controlled disposal.
- Collection and reutilization of nutrients.
In general, the innovative character of the Project comprises the completion of the Project considering the high environmental standard deriving from Danish regulation and standards and rigorous qualitative demands to the process and applicability of the products.
The project is divided in three phases; phase one consists of planning, engineering and design; phase two is the cosntruction phase followed by the evaluation phase where experience with the operation is gained.
