USE OF WASTE HEAT FROM POWER STATION FOR DRYING OF POULTRY MANURE

Objetivo

Exploitation, cost reduction and energy saving in a drying process by use of waste heat.
A new plant for drying 15000 T/y of manure could use 110-125 deg. C waste heat supplied by power station via dh network.
Nominal heat power is 13 MW, heat supply is 1,2 MW, 3,2 TJ/Y.
The whole process produces useful dry manure and leads to a reduction of phosphate emission. The needed heat during summer increases the district heating efficiency.
INNOVATION : Drying with low temperature waste heat within environmental limiting conditions.

The Plant consists of a modular drying unit and equipment for the treatment of waste residues. The drying unit receives 300 TJ/y of waste heat originally supplied by a 2. 1 GW power station via a district heating system. The plant has a poultry manure throughput of 1500 T/y resulting in 60,000 T/y of dry pellets.
The waste heat enters the plant at approximately 105 deg.
C, reducing the manure water content form 68% to 20%. The plant will operate for 7500 h/y and thus process 20 T/hr of poultry waste , producing 12 T/y of vapour and waste residues and 8 T/hr of dry pellets.
The waste residues, consisting primarily of ammonia, dust and odour, are treated biologically to the required environmental standards. The utilisation of waste heat for drying results in an annual energy saving of 4500 TOE.
At present the market for dried manure pellets is not sufficient to support the original planned levels of production and thus output has been reduced.
