Objectif
In accordance with the energy, environmental, agricultural and social policy stated by the EU and the National Parliaments in the participating countries there will be a need for further development of the techniques for power and heat generation in an environmentally balanced way.
This proposal for a Biomass Gasification for the Production of Electricity and Heat plant describes how these policies can be fulfilled by the use of biomass grown on set-aside land and waste wood from forests. The possibilities and limitations of the growing, harvest, handling and conversion of biomass into heat and power by means of the pressurized gasification technology constructed as an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle plant will be demonstrated. The heat will be utilized in an existing district heating system, and the efficiency of the BIOCYCLE plant is 87,9 per cent with annual full load operating hours of 7,450. Also the potential for commercial utilization of the BGPEH system will be investigated.
Willow was gasified for the first time at the Enviropower test plant in Tampera. The aim of the gasification test was to establish a firm basis for design of the BIOCYCLE plant.
The test were successful with a high carbon conversion, but also with some deposition of ash in the cyclone and the first gas cooler.
Transfer of the project to the city of Kotha in Finland is being investigated.
The biomass will be supplied from the grown willow short rotation forests of an area of 1,200 to 1,400 hectares and energy wood from forest thinning and ordinary forestry.
Before entering the gasifier, the biomass chips are fed to the fuel dryer which is a type using superheated steam as drying medium and which has a very low energy consumption. The moisture content of the chips leaving the dryer will be 10-15 per cent.
The construction of the feeding system is the lock-hopper/screw feeder system, and the inert gas will be produced by means of combustion of natural gas.
The air supply for the gasifier is extracted from the compressor part of the gas turbine, and the product gas is cooled and cleaned before entering the gas turbine unit.
The exhaust heat from the gas turbine is converted into steam utilized in a steam turbine in the heat recovery steam boiler. Both turbines are connected to a power generator. The condensate from the steam turbine is converted into heat and utilized in an existing district heating system. The program investigates the possibilities of reducing the price of the production of heat and power by the BGPEH technology.
The innovative aspects will be the reliability and availability of a BGPEH power plant as well as using wood chips from short rotation brestey as fuel in the gasification process.
The growing, harvest, storage and handling of fuels will be part of the innovative aspects on the fuel side.
On the technical side, the main innovative aspects will be the biomass feeding system of the gasifier and the gas clean up system.
