Objective
The importance of the placement of treatment portals to achieve local tumour control is objectively documented. There is a need for technology to provide real time or near real time images of patient anatomy with high energy X-ray during treatment on linear accelerator. New detecting technique is proposed for hard X-ray imaging for on-line monitoring of the position of irradiated field of patient corps during radiotherapy treatment. The proposed imaging technique is based on coupling of highly sensitive gaseous detector to a heavy metal gamma rays converter. The converter should be used because of very small conversion cross section in gaseous medium of high energy gamma rays. High detection efficiency of the detecting module and its very good position resolution should assure image of good contrast with minimal radiation dose. Application of the electronic portal imaging device increases the quality of the therapy and minimises a risk brought to a patient. The scope of the project is to determine characteristics of the high energy X-ray radiography method as well as technical feasibility of the device. The research intended will complete the evaluation of expected performance of the proposed measurement using small model. The model of the detecting element will be constructed and it will serve for the development and test of dedicated data acquisition electronic chain. This should permit to define some elements of the detecting technique for further development of scale imaging device.
