Advanced materials for orthotic devices

Objectif

Orthotic devices (splints and braces), which are intended to promote the mobility of patients suffering from paralysis ofr deformity, represent severe challenges to design and manufacturing. Traditionally, these devices are manufactured from conventional materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, plastic and leather. At present there are a number of available advanced (lighter, stronger and stiffer) materials such as polymer matrix and metal patrix composites which could offer substantial benefits in the manufacture, perforemance and repair of orthotic devices. It is the aim of this project to manufacture a prototype orthotic device from these advaned materials. The end users, (paraplegic patients) will ultimately benefit from a lighter more confortable, more sociallyu acceptable and mechanically stiffer (more efficient) device. Cutting; machinig, joining and repair technologies will be developed and exploited by the project partners . These technologies will subsequently be transferred to other relevant industrial sectors where use of advanced materials will make a significant impact.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classe les projets avec EuroSciVoc, une taxonomie multilingue des domaines scientifiques, grâce à un processus semi-automatique basé sur des techniques TLN.
