The eq-net: to develop at a European level a standardised measure of health status and to facilitate its application

Objectif

Objectives:
The aim of the EQ-net project is to support at a European level, the development, adaptation and application of the EQ-SD, an instrument to measure and value health status for use in clinical research, public health surveys and economic evaluation. The specific objectives of the EQ-net project will be: A central facility containing integrated datasets relating to characteristics of the EQ-SD and its application; at least 15 final harmonised translations of the EQ-5D in European languages; the production of guidelines for health state valuation, translations and application in economic and non-economic studies; to make available information packages and to support users through user conferences and training sessions.

The aim of the EQ-net project is to support at a European level, the development, adaptation and application of the EQ-5D, an instrument to measure and value health status for use in clinical research, public health surveysand economic evaluation. The EuroQol Group originated in 1987 and comprised informal multinational and multidisciplinary research collaboration. After an initial phase of psychometric testing, the Group produced a generic, standardised, non disease-specific instrument for classifying and valuing health states. TheEQ-5D system classifies health states in terms of 5 dimensions, divided into three levels, which taken together defines a total of 243 health states. Moreover, by using a simple Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the EQ-5D is capable of generating a single index figure of health status. Over the past years members of the EuroQol Group have been engaged in deriving values from different groups (e.g. patients and population samples) for EQ-5D health states in several European countries.

It has been shown that values for specific set of health states, known as the common core, were similar in a number of European countries. After a phase of fragmented multinational research there is an urgent need to integrate the earlier national research efforts. Data gathered in these projects should be integrated at European level and secondary analysis performed to produce a standardised measure of population and patient health status. The proposal is to create a network resource, which will manage the project and integrate the data and provide assistance to participants performing the tasks in the proposed schedule. These tasks are divided into three subprojects, which relate to issues in the field of Translation, Valuation and Application (TVA). The network resource will be involved in the communication of information and knowledge about the EQ-5D.

The end products of the proposed EQ-net project will be: A central facility containing integrated datasets relating to characteristics of the EQ-5D and its application; at least 15 final harmonised translations of the EQ-5D in European languages; the production of guidelines for health state valuation, translations and application in economic and non-economic studies; to make available information packages and to support users through user conferences and training sessions.06 06

Programme(s)
