- To identify the outcome measures used in rehabilitation across Europe.
- To evaluate both the cross-diagnostic and cross-cultural validity of a selection of outcome measures.
- To co-calibrate different measures assessing the same construct (within country and diagnosis).
- To construct an item bank for each outcome construct used in rehabilitation.
Brief Description:
Rehabilitation has a major role to play in ameliorating the consequences of disease. However, the increasing need to compare health status within and across diagnostic groups at the regional, national and international level is compromised by the diversity of outcome measures. Such problems are exacerbated throughout Europe, where several languages are spoken.$L New methodological approaches based on the work of Georg Rasch have the potential to identify outcome measures that work consistently across different diagnostic groups and countries. These highly innovative and powerful techniques will be used to address the problem of standardisation of outcome measurement in rehabilitation. A postal questionnaire will identify the outcome measures currently in use throughout rehabilitation in Europe. A set of measures will be selected for inclusion in the project based on clearly defined criteria that will be determined at a review meeting following the survey. These criteria are likely to include the extent of use of any measure and their relevance to important diagnostic groups, such as stroke and arthritis. Anonymous copies of data from the selected instruments will be obtained from members of the network. These data are currently collected as part of routine clinical practice, or in research projects for purposes of methodological evaluation. Some members of the network will, however, introduce new instruments into their own practice in order to facilitate the necessary diagnostic and cross cultural coverage of the project.
The scaling properties of those instruments meeting the criteria for inclusion in the project will be examined. An extensive training programme will extend the skill base for this type of analysis throughout Europe. The final outcome of the project will be dissemination of a Protocol for European Standardisation of Outcome measurement in Rehabilitation (Pro-ESOR)
