Manus is a manipulator for handicapped people with very limited functions of the upper limbs. Manus serves hand and arm functions to the disabled. Most times it is placed beside the wheelchair, and it can be Tele operated by the disabled person by means of various input devices. These input devices are controlled by means of the very limited remaining functions of the disabled Manus User, e.g. via one or more fingers, chin or other body part.
Within the project the computer hardware of Manus has been redesigned. The new hardware is based on the OEM PC104 card and CAN busses for communication with the manipulator and the input device. This hardware architecture enables using more sophisticated control software. Via the CAN bus structure also a better integration of the wheelchair and other environmental controllers with the MANUS is realized. The OEM parts and modular structure offer a good possibility to upgrade easily too more advanced PC cards.
Within the project also the software structure has been thoroughly revised. New control functionalities are offered, such as adjustment of co-ordinate frames and pre-programmed movements. As a result Manus can move with respect to the gripper, the wheelchair or an externally defined co-ordinate frame. Repeated movements can be executed automatically by one press of the button. The new software structure is open, giving good access to the third parties to develop their own control configuration.
A third part of the project concerns Tele diagnosis and remote maintenance. Using these functionalities, the status of Manus can be monitored via telephone line. Also new software releases can be uploaded via this phone line. This leads to decrease in down time of Manus.
