Transnational collaboration within the EU for research in high precision engineering, micro-engineering and nanotechnology - incorporating the formation of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology

Objetivo

The Euspen society, established as a consequence of the Euspen EC project, has built the technological network and the business policies to pursue the on-going objectives of the project into the future. These objectives are primarily to promote and improve international competitiveness of European industry in high precision engineering, micro-engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology. Project tasks planned included the formation of a society membership, the organization of seminars, conferences and scientific training, the stimulation of new EC collaborative projects and building strong relationships with other European and International networks and societies.
In relation to the formation of the society Euspen (the European society for precision engineering and nanotechnology), membership was opened within the first year and now has more corporate members than any other technical comparable society on an international scale. The official structure of the society contains the headquarters, presently located within the UK, three regional centres in France, Germany and Italy, national nodes that are established in 8 further nations and then its membership. Strong relationships have been built with European corporate members. Numerous company visits have taken place and as a result, a large proportion of the training now provided by Euspen uses tutors from high-profile manufacturing organizations, such as Philips, Heidenhain and ASML.
Successful International Conferences have taken place in Bremen, Copenhagen and Turin, whilst preparations are well underway for future events that will be held in Eindhoven, May 2002, Aachen, May 2003 and Glasgow, May 2004.
In order to expand Euspen's portfolio of services, four EC proposals were submitted over the final project year including projects VisionOnline, Nano Grind, Mantys and Evigem. All 4 have now been successfully negotiated and the main project, VisionOnline, was announced at this year's Euspen International Conference in Turin. With a start date of 1st June 2001 and project duration of 4 years, Euspen Ltd (the legal entity formed from the society) is project coordinator.
In summary, it is considered that although the Euspen project has now been successfully completed, the society and its activities formed from the project will continue as an on-going activity. Furthermore, the objectives of Euspen will be further developed and expanded with advanced services supported by new EC projects.
