IMPROVEMENT OF THE STRUCTURAL ACOUSTIC QUALITY OF TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES USING SIMULATION TECHNIQUES OF BINAURAL NOISE ANALYSIS

Objectif

The main targets of the project were successfully obtained. The hypothesis on the structural acoustic coupling between components were investigated to define limitation of the applications. It demonstrated that it exists a wide field of engineering applications of these methods, but on the other side, in low frequency domain one has to take care of the limitation of the coupling effect to truncate the hybrid model. The results obtained will be sufficient to develop the commercial basis of a new system useful for engineering applications in the automotive industry after one year of complementary work.
The goal of the project is to set up an advanced laboratory equipement to optimize, from subjective criteria, the binaural acoustic response of transportation systems (automotive, train, airplan, ship...).

It could be used in engineering department to specify the target of a new product in terms of acoustic characteristics in order to meet the customer requirements (and the company image); furthermore it could be used to provide and listen acoustical binaural responses, resulting from partial or full modifications of vehicle, numerically simulated (sources, filtering element, panel transparencies modifications).

The basic innovation is to develop an industrial methodology based on:

- Partial and virutal coherence (signal processing technique) to locate measurement points giving the optimal input data in order to select transfert fonction exactly relevant to the component which will be under modification.

- The expected result of a current research activity relating to an advanced signal processing and aiming at improving the link between sound quality judgement and a multi-source system, the later corresponding to several spatially distributed sounds on the walls inside or outside the passenger compartement.

Computer structural-acoustic design is still under development. In practice, however there is still an important need of experimental measurements and correlation procedures. The project will bring together partners with experience in all revelant areas with the objective of creating a new industrial analysis system usable in the design process of transportation vehicles.

A great improvement in the acoustical behaviour of the automotive product is foreseen.
