FACILITATED TRANSPORT MEMBRANES WITH IMPROVED STABILITY FOR REMOVAL OF HEAVY METALS FROM INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER

Objetivo

The main problem of all liquid membranes is their stability, which at this moment is insufficient for the process to be used in commercial processes. This is the main reason why this technology is still in the research stage. Therefore, the main objective for any research into facilitated transport membranes should be aimed at the improvement of the stability of these membranes.

The project aims at producing a basis for a "Facilitated Transport Membrane System" able to selectively remove heavy metals from waste water. Starting from the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge, this project intends to improve the performance (stability!) of facilitated transport membranes in two parallel ways:

- development of fixed site carrier membranes (FRSCM);
- improvement of the stability supported liquid membranes by applying a protective pilymeric layer on top of a porous matrix.

Parallel to the development of a stable facilitated transport membrane system, the design and synthesis of improved carriers for the separation of heavy metals takes place. In the design part of this research novel computer design techniques will be used to optimize the carriers needed for both facilitated transport systems described above. The most important boundary conditions for this part of the research (both design and synthesis) is given by the incorporation of the developed carriers into a stable facilitated transport system.
