During four test sequences three cutting tool location systems and five cutting tools were tested while cutting lines, curves and ramps. From the evaluation of the test results it clearly can be seen that the highest potential for improvements and development lies in the cutting system itself. Development of the cutting tools may reduce the wear but cannot influence the cutting performance substantially. However, the cutting tool location system, the new cutting tools and constructional improvements of the prototype have reached such a technical status that conversion into commercial production is to be expected shortly.
The applicability of the prototype Hard Rock Cuttability Criterion (HRCC) was defined in order to compare the rock properties versus machine performance. Taking into account the spatial variability of rock qualities, the usual sample scarcity and the non-linear feature of the process, it was apparent that the use of algorithms based on fuzzy logic was imperative. A methodological example is presented which fits with the data obtained in the field work. Nevertheless, the theoretical technique is general and can be applied to any other concrete case. It can be concluded that the monitoring of cutting hard rocks without the use of explosives using adequate techniques succeeds in good economic conditions.
