CAMATT is a concerted action of the European Commission aimed at the establishment of an open network of European research institutes and industrial organizations to provide interactive co-operation in research activities related to machine tool and manufacturing technology. This collaboration aimed, by means of synergy and cross-fertilization, to improve the results of research effort in this area. The strategic goal of the CAMATT project was reached via the determination and achievement of the following project objectives: - Collection of nationally funded ongoing and finished R&D activities in Europe, which are related to machine tool and manufacturing technology. - Determination of important future R&D topics for the above mentioned sectors - Dissemination of the project results - Establishment of a data base containing selected information about the finished and on-going R&D activities mentioned above, containing as well European R&D partners and their research projects According to the project structure plan of the CAMATT project the five working groups (coatings, digital drives, diagnosis, quality and benchmarking) started with information collection in the European Union and in USA/Japan as well as in other countries. While a certain number of R&D projects running within the European Union could be found it was difficult for some of the working groups to find information about research activities in USA and especially Japan. In parallel to the first tasks, questionnaires for the interrogation of users/suppliers were prepared and sent out to industry. The answers were collected, analysed and interpreted by the respective working group or co-operating working groups with similar questions and interests (i.e. strategic topics WG4 and 5 - quality and benchmarking).
