Objective
The proposed research is directed at developing suitable materials, plant and techniques for waterproofing existing masonry-lined tunnels. Various trials have been made in the past into waterproofing tunnels with very little success. This can largely be attributed to deficiencies in the materials, plant, or the application techniques used. It is therefore vital that any future work tackle the problem in its entirety by combining the right material with the right plant and application technique. The proposed project, when completed, will provide tunnel inspection techniques, waterproofing techniques, structural assessment methods, safety monitoring and water management systems. In the course of this project, all the techniques and systems will be subjected to evaluations in disused as well as live tunnels to assess their applicability and efficiency.
Successful completion of the project is expected to yield savings of at least 8 million ECU across Europe in tunnel repairs and maintenance. The developed materials, plant and techniques could also find useful applications in many other industries including other industries including other tunnel owners (such as inland waterway, highway and sewage authorities), and areas like mining and general construction.
