COMPUTER AIDED ULTRASONIC NDT FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF CEN STANDARDS

Objetivo


A set of hardware and software modules has been developed; these modules form the building blocks of the CamuS system.

- A mechanically linked probe position monitor which offers greater flexibility than existing types; measurement of three spatial co-ordinates and the skew angle of the probe is provided, along with flexible mounting arrangements to allow the device to be applied on components of a wide range of dimensions.

- A PC-based data acquisition unit with built-in ultrasonic pulser-receiver and dedicated software application. During the examination the application screen provides a continuous display of the ultrasonic A-scan; the coupling status is monitored and combined with probe position information to produce a display showing the surface coverage actually achieved.

- A software module which calculates the scan parameters required to carry out an ultrasonic inspection of a component according to the requirements of CEN standard prEN1714. This module also creates an internal model of the test-piece.

- A software module which enables the ultrasonic data and test-piece model to be superimposed and visualised in three-dimensions, allowing the user to identify the source of the ultrasonic signal. The ultrasonic data is combined with the test-piece model to produce an internal representation of the data in a three-dimensional space which can then be presented on the screen.

- A software module which can classify ultrasonic signals obtained from planar, carbon steel, testpieces to provide the user with probabilistic estimates of the type of defect present. The module includes basic utilities to represent and analyse ultrasonic data and advanced algorithms to perform automatic discrimination of defects.

A set of welded test blocks representing a range of different components has been manufactured. During fabrication, welding defects were deliberately introduced; these were comprehensively examined after completion by a variety of methods, including conventional manual ultrasonic inspection. A total of more than 60 defects in 17 blocks is available.
This proposal is directed at the development of a protable, intelligent system to assist the UT technician in the performance of manual ultrasonic inspections and in the interpretation of the resulting data.

Particular attention will be paid to retaining the flexibility of manual inspections.

The system will be realised by defelopment of the following components:

i software modules to generate, and monitor compliance with, test procedures based on CEN standards and component geometry;
ii an ultrasonic data acquisition instrument with built-in calibration procesures;
iii new robust, flexible probe position monitoring devices which are capable of operation in areas of restricted access;
iv new software algorithms for assisting the operator with flaw characterisation and with flaw location and sizing;
v limited interactive 3D visualisation facilites enabling the ultrasonic test data to be viewed superimposed upon the component.

Potential applications for this system lie in all industrial sectors in which manual ultrasonic inspection is employed. Reduced time for documentation, coupled with reductions in unnecessay repairs is expected to lead to substantial cost savings across the Community.
