DISTRIBUTED STRAIN MONITORING ON HIGH TEMPERATURE PIPEWORK

Objectif

The proposed programme of work is directed at developing strain measuring instrumentation to provide structural monitoring of high temperature pipework in production plant.Such instruments will enable direct structural integrity monitoring giving effective assessment of plant life.Absence of readily available, reliable and affordable strain gauges capable of meeting the rigorous specifications dictates current industrial practice of inferring structural integrity and consequential life through measurements of temperature and internal pressure by the application of analytical models.Optical fibre technology offers the capability to undertake measurements in the harsh operational environment and recent developments in optical fibre sensors have demonstrated their ability to fulfil these requirements.Advances in few fibre coatings and in-fibre strain sensing structures that can operate at elevated temperatures(approximately 600 C)are the basis for the enhanced operation. The proposed developed programme will lead to the demonstration of a prototype strain measurement system with fully integrated temperature compensation.

Critical areas including welds, bends, headers, can be monitored on-line,in real-time for material failure, fracture and creep fatigue analysis.

The major tasks within the project are:

1-Developments of quasi-distributed/multiplixed optical fibre sensor arrays and processing instrumentation.
2-High temperature armoured cabling development for development for industrial environment.
3-Transducer engineering development of pipe attachment techniques and design for retrofitting on existing high temperature pipework.
4-Systems evaluation and validation in controlled laboratory conditions and industrial plant field trials.

The system will enable many points over an extended area to be monitored in real time along a single data highway minimising, cabling, installation and instrumentation costs. The two major areas for cost benefit are anticiped to be up to 25% savings on plant maintenance costs and in extended operational life of plant derived by closer life prediction.
