TOLERANT CONCRETES DESIGNED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE DURING PRODUCTION AND STRUCTURAL SERVICE

Objective

The proposed research is directed at developing a second generation High Performance Concrete which is more tolerant to minor errors made during construction. The new type of concrete will be developed based on studies of the micro properties of the binder by comining the well-known silica fume/superplasticizer thechniques with developing technique in the fields of clay mineralogy and surface potential engineering.

The major research tasks are:

i) Identification of electro-chemical properties of commercially available clays in Europe.
ii) Study the effect of surface active agents as dispersers for multi-powder combinations of cement, micro silica and clay.
iii) Development of at least 6 different types of concretes based on the proposed techniques and document properties.
iv) Verification of rheological and functional properties of the new type of concrete through trial mixing and full scale trial castings.

Successful completion should yield savings in production and maintenance costs of HPC structure in the order of 35% of the cost of concrete due to reduction of non-conformances, rejections or increased maintenance costs.
