TESTING AND IMPROVEMENT OF EXTRUDABILITY FOR PRIMARY EQUIVALENT RECYCLED ALUMINIUM

Objetivo

The need to conserve world resources and energy has become a major concern to Governments all over Europe. This has been especially so in the case of aluminium. The production of primary Aluminium, from its ore Bauxite,is costly and has many economic and environmental problems. In comparison the recycling of Alumunium requires only 5% of the energy and is couples with little metal loss in the process. However, recycling can lead to higher percentage inclusions in the secondary billet which affects billet performance during extrusion. Efforts are made to control quality of the secondary billets using filtration and cleaning techniques, however consistent extrusion efficiency is not always predictable. To this end the proposed research intends to develop a material quality(Extrudability)test by performing a deformation simulation of the extrusion process, thereby identifying dynamic influences of the microstructural state. These can then be quantified through "multi-state"variable equations and used directly to predict the production performance quickly and cheaply, with large savings in wasted production time and waste.

Therefore the proposed research programme will identify all relevant parameters to be monitored during casting, and extrusion and relate these to die construction and final product quality, from recycled "Primary Equivalent"cast Aluminium. In this way mechanical and cosmetic properties will be optimised.
