Keywords: GRP, pipeline, liner, high pressure, software Natural gas for domestic and industrail use is tranmitted over long distances in steel pipes at a pressure of approximatly 70 bar. Service lines to domestic users are now exclusivly laid using non-reinforced polyethylene pipes working at pressures of 4 bar. In recent years a number of delvelopment have occured whereby high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe systems for use up to 7 bar have become available. The overall objective of this project is the development of a new piping system made from fibreglass reinforced polymers and designed for pressures up to 70 bar and diameters up to 500mm. The replacement of high energy consuming materials, such as steel, in pressure ranges up to 70 bar, will reduce energy costs and polluation. Composites have an advantage over other materials in that they will not degrade in corrosive environments or under the action of internal fluids. Major advantages include a coil lock joint, low gas permeable liner and a safety factor on bursting of 4.5. The experience accumulated by all partners in the design, production, and testing of the pipeline system is gathered into a draft code of practice suitable for use by the general gas distribution industry. The ultimate aim is to have this document accepted as a standard by bodies such as the API. A fully integrated software package for GRP pipeline design and costing has been developed. he software is a Windows based package incorporating a state-of-the art graphical user interface. This package will be available for use in the general gas distribution industry. The main areas of exploitation lie in the production of the pipeline and joint systems, the marketing of the developed software package, the adoption of the code of practice as a recognised standard. as well as numerous other fringe benefits.
