One of the biggest markets for thin walled containers is that for beverage cans. Presently the global beverage can market is of the order of 200 billion units per annum. Beverage cans are manufactured using a combination of deep drawing and wall ironing. The wall ironing is usually carried in a machine known as a bodymaker which holds three ironing dies. A deep drawn can, carried on a horizontally driven carbide punch, is forced through each ironing die and then stripped from the punch after leaving the last die. At present the minimum can wall thickness that can be achieved using a conventional bodymaker is around 80 ?m. A forming technique based on rotating ball races whereby a can wall thickness of 30??m can be achieved is described.
