PLASMA ENHANCED DEPOSITION OF CORROSION AND WEAR RESISTANT COATINGS

Resultados aprovechables

Research has been conducted on the development of industrially compatible plasma assisted processes for the deposition of corrosion and wear resistant layers on high duty parts of industrial products and on cutting and forming tools to enhance lifetime and reliability. The main conclusions are: boron carbon coatings can be achieved by plasma chemical vapour deposition (PCVD) which are of good quality and their adhesion on alumina substrates is better than on steel; zirconium carbon coatings show good adherence on cold work tool steels and give special advantages in the tribological area; cathodic arc deposition produces hard diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings with good adhesion on steel substrates; metallike coatings based on chromium and tantalum can be deposited by PCVD; silicon carbon films with compositions varying between amorphous silicon and amorphous carbon can be deposited at temperatures below 350 C; multilayer metal carbon (titanium) based coatings, combining excellent adhesion, low friction and good wear resistance are produced on a routine basis by plasma assisted techniques. Tests have shown that the coatings developed can be used in many fields and excellent results have been obtained in many practical applications. Diamond deposition, however, needs considerable research effort to scale up to industrial applications.
