INTEGRATION OF NON-CONTACT INSPECTION WITH MODELLING OF ENGINEERING COMPONENTS

Objetivo

The project (acronym NIMEC) is aimed at advancing the state of the art in measurement of component geometry by developing and demonstrating an integrated system employing non-contact transducers manipulated by customised multi-axis manipulator and control system.
The results of this project have demonstrated effective bi-directional data communication between a CAD-oriented data analysis system and a non-contact multi-axis measuring machine. The project has developed an advanced CCD array-based laser triangulation sensor and integrated this with a 3 axis CMM, to provide the core data acquisition system for the project. Software methods to calibrate the measurement system have been developed and integrated within a comprehensive machine control software suite tailored to meet the project requirements. Novel software methods have also been developed to enable "off-line" inspection planning based on CAD surface definition of nominal geometry as well as 3D analysis of measurement data relative to CAD models. Non-contact sensor development has highlighted the advantages inherent in using non-contact whilst at the same time establishing the fundamental physical constraints of non-contact methods. Software development has successfully addressed the computational performance problems associated with the large data sets which may be generated using non-contact sensors. The general computational strategies arising from this work can be applied to a wide range of 3D point data sources.
Inspection programmes will be interactively generated within a UNIX based workstation based on a CAD representation of the nominal component geometry. The inspection data generated by the measuring system will be used to generate a CAD model of the actual geometry which can subsequently be used for comparison with the nominal CAD geometry. Methods of comparing measured with nominal geometries are to be researched and implemented to enable rapid identification of geometric distortion and to allow re-alignment of measured 3-D free-form surfaces to bye carried out without the need for complex mechanical holding fixtures. The result of the project will be a measuring system demonstrating the above features with a nominal measuring volume 500 x 500 x 500 mm.
