WOOD ANALYSIS BY DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING

Objetivo

The overall objectives of this project are to develop micromechanical models for the kinetics and the microstructural changes that take place during and after each deformation step in industrial hot processing of aluminium alloys.
A general analysis has been made of the conditions of employment concerning the optical wood defect detection systems for the massive timber industry. Concerning veneer, all the types of wood defects, appearing at the different stages of plywood fabrication have been identified for 2 species (Maritime Pine and Okoume).

An extensive survey of literature has shown that for the problem of contour based defects well established algorithms and procedures exist. For the colour and texture inspections however robust and fast to compute methods have yet to be developed.

A colour image coprocessor has been developed for the real time image acquisition based on 3 charge coupled device (CCD) colour line scan cameras. It is able to process the colour video signals from up to 4 colour line scan cameras simultaneously.

For veneer application, 3 of 5 textural analysis methods tested gave good results with respect to their ability to identify texture defects on Okoume veneer.

A vision system was completely redesigned. It is composed mainly of 3 parts: an acquisition module, an image processing module and an host computer.
In order to validate the tests, a mechanical structure was built that supports the cameras and the lighting system. Lighting by transparency enable problems of opened defects to be solved. Direct lighting is convenient for classical defects.
Work was also carried out with respect to the inspection of cork surface and dimensional control of parquet. Surface analysis is based on a 3 CCD matrix camera which can perform the following operations:
real time colour image acquisition and colour space transformation;
real time pixel transformation;
image binarization and filtering;
classification decision.
The effect of the microstructural changes in between deformation passes will be expressed in terms of change in the constitutive equations for flow stress as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature so that they can be incorporated directly into finite element codes which model the overall mechanical and thermal conditions of the working process.

Several other major deliverables will be developed, e.g. reproducibility of data for industrial processing using laboratory scale equipment, exactness of the use of total equivalent plastic strain for both flow stress and microstructural evolution, and role of texture development in determining recovery and recrystallisation kinetics.
