MODELLIZATION AND PROCESS CONTROL OF LIQUID-CONTAINING METALLIC ELECTROCOATINGS (LCME)

Objetivo

This will be realized through a unique multidisciplinary research effort in which electrochemists, colloid chemist, materials and chemical processing engineers will join forces.

Major tasks are the optimization of the production technology of liquid-containing microcapsules with tailored characteristics, the development of appropriate process control techniques allowing a qualitative and quantitative in-situ control of the codeposition and the achievement of a breakthrough in the mathematical modelling of the liquid-containing metallic electrocoating process.

From this research a new type of coated materials designed as self lubricating or corrosion resistant materials, wear detector or metallic foam will result.
The following interesting achievement were realized:
- synthesis methods for micron-sized microcapsules containing aqueous or oily solutions were developed,
- those parameters of the synthesis process of the microcapsules that interfere badly with the subsequent electroplating were identified,
- major progress was made in our understanding of the mechanism of the incorporation of particles in electrolytic coatings,
- two techniques for the in-situ detection of particles in the neighbourhood of electrodes were developed, and are suited for the construction of a sensor measuring the rate of particles incorporation,
- it was demonstrated that the incorporation of oil resulted in low-friction wear resistant metallic coatings that can be used in unlubricated contact conditions,
- the need for better understanding of the role of organic and inorganic additives present in the plating solutions on the electrolytic of codeposition was recognised.
