MULTIPARAMETER CHEMICAL SENSORS FOR ON-LINE DATA AQUISITATION OF BLOOD PHYSIOLOGICAL DATA

Objetivo

The proposal aims at developing a single-use multiparameter sterilisable ex-vivo chemical sensor.
The project aims at developing a single use multiparameter ex vivo chemical sensor that can be sterilized. Suitable sensor principles have to be selected which fulfil the specifications of the potential applications (ie the performance of the sensors should be comparable to that of laboratory analysers with respect to measurement range and accuracy). The response time has to be enhanced drastically to fulfill the requirements of the potential application. Materials have to be compatible with the ethylenoxide sterilization process, especially since most available polymers for sensor purposes are not stable during sterilization.

These specifications can be fulfilled by the development of sensor materials with better sensitivity, selectivity, faster response time and sufficient lifetime. These new materials consist of metallic or carbon electrodes in combination with new polymers acting as membranes.

A multiparameter chemical sensor system for bloodgas online oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH monitoring has been developed. The system consists of a 2-lumen catheter with a sensor flow through cell, a pump unit with instrumentation and a personal computer. The sensor device is based on an integrated silicon chip containing ion sensitive field effect transistors (ISFET) with CMOS signal processing, thin film electrode systems and polymeric membranes for potentiometric and amperometric transducers. In vitro measurements and animal studies with anaesthetized pigs show good correlation with standard analyzer equipment. Problems such as drift and poor biocompatibility could be drastically reduced with this extracorporeal monitoring system. The concept opens the way for the integration of further sensors such as electrolyte and metabolite sensors.
Suitable sensor principles have to be selected which fulfil the specifications of the potential applications i.e. the performance of the sensors should be comparable to that of laboratory analyzers with respect to measurement range and accuracy. The response time has to be enhanced drastically to fulfil the requirements of the potential application. Materials have to be compatible with the ethylenoxide sterilization process, especially since most available polymers for sensor purposes are not stable duri sterilization.

These specifications can be fulfilled by the development of sensor materials with better sensitivity, selectivity, faster response time and sufficient lifetime. These new materials consist of metallic or carbon electrodes in combination with new polymers acting as membranes.

The sensors should be at least sensitive to blood gases O2, CO2 and pH and optional to electrolytes such as K+, Ca++, Cl- and HCO3. One type of the respective sensing mechanism depends on the surface properties of electrodes, other mechanisms depend on the bulk or surface properties of polymers, which have to be deposited directly onto an electrode or the gate of a chemical sensitive field effect transistor (ChemFET).
