THE DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION AND TEST OF A DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING ARCHITECTURE AND TOOL SUITE (DEFMAT)

Objetivo

New Design For Manufacturing (DFM) tools are required which can be tailored to the needs of individual enterprises.

They should be integrated into the Design/Manufacturing systems of the enterprise, with the possibility for incremental capture of manufacturing rules and information. It should be implemented so as to be accessible from the earliest design stages right up to design engineering.
The key results of the DEFMAT project are:
functional specification for design for manufacture architecture (DFM/A) systems, with input from a range of industries;
design and manufacturing knowledge gathered for the electronic and mechanical domains;
a generic architecture for DFM/A systems, involving the design of knowledge and product data representation schemes.

With respect to the current state of the art, the DEFMAT generic architecture consists of innovation in:
the overall generic modular architecture for DFM/A systems;
a message passing mechanism between modules;
DFM/A analysis design;
product model design;
process and equipment model design to support DFM/A;
user interface design for online DFM/A with a computer assisted design (CAD) system.

DEFMAT was started as a response to the industrial need for tools to assist design personnel in the process of concurrent engineering. It provides a generic architecture that can be used to develop tools that can be applied in a wide spectrum of design activities. The context of design activities can be characterized in 3 aspects: product domain, design focus, and design manufacturing processes.

The implementation of customized DEFMAT systems at particular industrial sites is being investigated and the system is being applied to other domains, such as shipbuilding.
A generic architecture will be developed for the implementation of DFM methods and the functional requirements of a prototype DFM system will be investigated and specified. The industrial partners, producing both electro-mechanical and electronic parts and products, will provide varied sources of design/manufacturing expertise and DFM knowledge.

This project will result in the implementation at the test-sites of industrial prototypes. Industrial prototype systems will be implemented and tested comprehensively, the results of these implementations will provide methodologies for future implementations of this architecture as well as showing where further developments are needed.
