Prediction of erosion due to cavitation in hydraulic machinery

CORDIS provides links to public deliverables and publications of HORIZON projects.

Links to deliverables and publications from FP7 projects, as well as links to some specific result types such as dataset and software, are dynamically retrieved from OpenAIRE .

Exploitable results

A methodology has been developed which gives a prediction of the life duration of the metallic walls of hydraulic machines and components submitted to cavitating flows. Typical fields concerned are: manufacturers and users of pumps, turbines, propellers, vanes, etc. The methodology consists of: performing local short duration measurements of the hydraulic cavitation intensity (HCI) on small scale models of the system; scaling up the results to the flow condition of the real machine; submitting the tested material to the predicted HCI on a special hydraulic rig; deducing from this reproduction the expected mass loss curve of the machine. Typical applications of the methodology will be reduction of the size (then cost) of the machines, preventive maintenance, supervision of machines in service and reduction of civil engineering work of hydraulic power plants.
