Résultats exploitables

Ink Jet (IJ) Printing is a cost effective form of printing from Personal Computers and Workstations in Home and Office environments. It is used to print documents, diagrams and overheads in A4 size, and CAD plots, posters, and display boards up to A0 size. Improved printer technology now claims to give near photographic image definition. IJ Printing is also being applied in radically different applications such as pre-proofing and short run textile printing, the manufacture of colour filters for flat screen TVs, and the marking of individual packages. Although existing Printer/Ink/Paper combinations can give reasonable prints in monochrome on some plain papers, performance on re-cycled papers is distinctly inferior. In the case of full colour printing, expensive coated papers, which cannot be used in any other type of office printer, must be utilized if the print quality is to be anything like acceptable. IJ printing on film (transparent and opaque) has similar problems, and in particular suffers from long drying times, which causes handleablility problems. All existing office colour IJ inks have mediocre lightfastness, and prints are unsuitable for exterior display. The basic objective of this project is to address and solve these problems through a coordinated study of each element of the IJ printing system leading to (i) high quality IJ printing performance on lower cost plain papers made from virgin, re-cycled and mixed stock, without degrading the performance of the papers when used in other common office printing processes especially laser printing, and (ii) enhanced IJ printing performance on film through the development of novel film coating systems. The project has achieved considerable success: Many of the original targets have been met and much of the work was done on schedule. All of the partners have prototype products for further development and have accumulated 'add on' technical knowledge as a result of the work carried out within the project.
