Memory alloys for new structural

Objectif

The objectives of MANSIDE, consisting in designing, implementing and testing new passive control devices, have been fully achieved. SMA-based devices can provide performances at least comparable, but often better than current devices, plus special features as the re-centring capability, a high durability, a superior fatigue resistance. This results in no need of maintenance along the entire structure lifetime, even after strong earthquakes, and makes the employment of SMA-based devices more convenient, from both a technical and an economical point of view, than the currently used passive control systems. Since 1998 they are covered by an Italian patent. A Project final workshop (Rome, 28-29 Jan.99: 200 participants of 10 countries), the diffusion of Project videos and workshop proceedings (about 1,000 persons reached) and the implementation of the proceedings and the 3rd yearly report into the DSTN-SSN Internet web site have ensured an adequate dissemination of Project results.
Objectives and content

In the last ten years the adoption of systems for the passive protection of buildings and infrastructures against vibrations of different source has been growing at an increasing rate, both for new constructions and for the retrofitting of existing ones, reaching the order of one thousand applications in the world. Even this large figure is anyhow negligible when compared to the global - present and future construction wealth, of several orders of magnitude larger, representing a virtually unlimited global market. Though, such growth is being strongly hampered by the limitations of the present technologies: for the different existing classes arise problems of ageing (e.g. for rubber components), of maintenance (e.g. for those based on fluid viscousity), of installation complexity or replacement and geometry restoration after strong events (e.g. those based on steel elements yielding or lead extrusion).

Recent developments in mass production of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) show a tremendous potential for improvement in this area. The high damping properties and superelastic behaviour of such metallic compounds migh in fact allow to combine the most desirable features of existing device concepts, without incurring in the associated draw-backs. Within this framing, the present project- is aimed at developing and testing of isolating and damping devices based on the use of SMA's.

Specific field shall be that of seismic' protection of buidings and infrastructures, but it is believed that the project would hold a vast conversion and spin-off potential towards other classes, such as wind-induced vibrations in civil engineering and machine vibrations within mechanical engineering.
Final major deliverables would include:

- SMA-based isolating and damping device components, founded both on high damping and superelasticity concepts;
- Assembled prototype devices,installed and tested on scaled structures; - Guidelines for the design and adoption of SMA based devices, including reliability requirements.

The team proposed to achieve the above targets comprises nine organisations from four European countries, with the industrial partners encompassing all the classes in the relevant product chain, from material production (SMM, Sw), to material manufacturing (AMT, Be), device production-installation (TIS, It, also a Sme) and civil engineering construction (AIAS, Gr). The coordination is provided by an Authority (SSN, It), with unique expertise and statutory role in the field of seismic isolation, while two Academic Institutions provide scientific support and advanced methodological capabilities on SMA's (KULeuven, Be) and seismic isolation (USB, It). Finally, a civil engineering consultant company (EDIN, It, also a Sme) supplying engineering design expertise and point of view. The proposers feel that no single European country could by far have provided an equally effective blend of skills and market interests.

Programme(s)
