Objective
BE95 - 1339 Measurement and Data Interpretation Technology for Quality in Manufacturing - MEDIATE
Advanced Quality Control of the entire manufacturing process can be significantly improved by the integration of IT solutions with advanced measurement and measurement-data interpretation techniques, and model-based quality control procedures integrating quality data of partial and sub-processes. The goal of Quality Control is to ensure zero defects at minimal cost.
The objective of this project is to develop IT measurement and analysis tools to enable the improved calculation of quality features for many products, components and jigs, and the procedures to control the quality of the entire production process. These are designed to be used in manufacturing industry, with specific demonstrators from the aerospace and automotive sectors.
This multi-sectorial project will include specification of requirements from the user point of view, elaboration and prototyping of advanced techniques, procedures and methods, as well as their integration, testing and evaluation in three industrial pilot implementations.
The systems tools and procedures developed within the project will cover four levels of data abstraction:
- Acquisition of raw data through use of measurement systems. This includes: measurement systems for controlling the technical process of manufacturing as well as for controlling the quality of the manufactured parts, and preparation, technical implementation and execution of the measurement process.
- Measurement-based inspection and analysis of surfaces and of characteristics of manufactured parts, thus relating reality of the manufacturing process to its models, to part design, CAD- and CAE-data.
- Determination of quality features and metrics being based on the second abstraction level and allowing to judge manufacturing quality through use of only a small number of parameters.
- Modelling, controlling and improving quality of the whole manufacturing process through relating quality features to the different phases and sub-processes which effect deviations and errors.
The consortium comprises manufacturers from the automotive and aerospace industries supported by IT vendor companies and academic/research institutes.
This proposal is based on the user requirements having obtained on consensus during the pilot phase of the AIT Initiative (EP7704). This initiative aims to push forward the competitiveness of European Industry in Design and Manufacturing processes in key industrial sectors through the appropriate integration of Information Technology.
