Advanced D.I. Gasoline Engine

Objective

BE95-1284 Advanced D.I. Gasoline Engine

Together with tighter emission standards (phase E) that are expected in Europe after the year 2000, new limits on carbon dioxide (C02) for passenger cars are proposed by the European Parliament, thus forcing manufacturers to operate for the first time directly on the engine concept instead of working once again just on the aftertreatment of the exhaust of the conventional indirect injection gasoline engine with fuel injected ahead of the intake ports.
Until now the various approaches to the DI gasoline engine, that has the potential to meet both future CO2 and pollutant emission targets, have shown the typical aspects of basic research dealing with solutions not able to be transferred into production concepts. Thus the main objective of the project is the realisation of a production-oriented ultrahigh efficient DI gasoline engine that, tested at vehicle level according to the European ECE+EUDC driving cycle, will be able to show:

- more than 15% C02 reduction with respect to the today's IDI gasoline engines, i.e. 3% lower than the C02 limit at vehicle level as proposed by the European Parliament (by taking into account that 15% of efficiency increase is expected from the vehicle-side improvements);
- pollutant reduction down to 0.2/0.1/0.1 g/km of CO/HC/NOx.
The information resulting from the project, being highly prenormative, will assist the European Commission in delivering the phase m standards, concerning the emission level that can be achieved with an advanced DI gasoline engine.
The DI gasoline engine to be developed in this project will consist of a fully integrated engine system characterized by:

- optimized injection / combustion,
- advanced aftertreatment with dynamic emission control,
- advanced valve control

At the end of the project, the emission reduction potential and the performance of the DI gasoline engine will be compared with those of an advanced DI diesel developed in a parallel project of the same cluster (see the Preamble).

The Consortium comprises three major European vehicle manufacturers, FIAT Research Center, Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot-Citroen who will identify the best DI gasoline engine configuration, a big European automotive electronics manufacturer, like Magneti Marelli who will develop the gasoline injection system and the engine control, and the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics of Aachen University who will take care of the combustion system optimization.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
