Smart tunnel boring machine

Objective

Objectives and content

Building underground is increasingly becoming a construction option due to urban development and environmental issues. In the eighties, European contractors have started using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with mud or earth pressure. Up to now, some problems have been extensively studied by manufacturers and contractors such as confinement pressure and grouting when other problems still have to be solved: ground subsidence, slurry design and control, guidance systerns,....

Most of the time, the manufacturer never gets feedback from the operation of the machine as its role stops when delivering the TBM to the end-user/ The STBM project aims to improve safety, provide a better quality and a more cost-effective digging technique for tunnel boring machine.

The main deliverables of the project are:

- to show the feasibility of a new progression technique that will permit to increase significantly the productivity while allowing to decrease the size of slurry circuits.
- to propose new sensors that will give a better understanding of machine behaviour (to anticipate environment changes).
- to get a better integration of data acquisition and data treatment. - to reduce the time of design and the startup time of a new machine at the beginning of a project
- to offer a better ergonomy and equipment integration to working people. - to reduce and/or control the noise level in TBM which can exceed threshold limits in present operations.

The consortium comprises a major contractor (BOUYGUES) operating many TBMs as an end-user and a major TBM European manufacturer (HERRENKNECHT). ALGOSYSTEMS S.A will be responsible of supervising software development while DISCESVA will bring their experience in noise control and specific acoustic measurements. Two research organizations, LRP and IAI will give the necessary theoretical frame.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
