Ultra High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites

Objectives and content

The objective of this research is to generate an understanding of the necessary materials selection and fabrication processes to allow the commercial development of complex oxide based continuous fibre matrix composites. The objective will be addressed through a programme of work which has components associated with the following topics:

- Fundamental studies; on the thermodynamic compatibility/stability of complex oxide/oxide materials, and the relationship between crystal chemistry/microstructure and high temperature mechanical properties.

- Fibre reinforcements; with novel chemistries, and multiphasic micro, structures, spun into small diameter (10-20 mm) multi filament tows from mixtures of high purity sols.

- Fibre matrix interphases; with compounds possessing fibre and matrix physical/chemical compatibility whilst retaining the necessary interface debond/shear characteristics at time/temperature conditions specified by typical applications.

- Matrices; consisting of stable/compatible oxide systems which can be fabricated with a minimum of pressure application to avoid fibre/interphase damage and to minimise fabrication costs.

- Thermomechanical evaluation; in creep and stress rupture of selected continuous fibre oxide/oxide CMCs to validate the-material selection and fabrication procedures and to correlate with existing creep models.
The development of such materials is necessary for the realisation of cleaner and more efficient industrial processes and are expected to make significant cost savings associated with energy usage and environmental pollution. These issues are currently being addressed by our major trading competitors, the USA and Japan, through nationally funded programmes. The future competitiveness of European industry will depend to a large extent on the availability of this technology. It is clearly important from an employment prospective that a strong competitive position is maintained and the proposed work in this project will contribute significantly to that goal.
