Microwave & infra red industrial applications for diamond

Exploitable results

The Microwave and Infra Red Industrial Applications of Diamond (MIRIAD) program was set up to develop the technologies and scientific understanding necessary for diamond to be exploited in a number of industrial applications. The program ran over 39 months and provided the framework for a number of industries and research organizations to work closely together. Within the project both a diamond CO2 laser window and klystron window were demonstrated. Overall the MIRIAD program is considered a success, with all the milestones of the project being exceeded and the final demonstrators produced. The program has resulted in significant advances in both the growth and processing of CVD diamond and has enabled the production of large area wafers in excess of 2mm thickness. Significant developments in the understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of CVD diamond have been made and data is now available which enables the performance of diamond components to be modeled. It is unlikely the developments reported in this work could have been achieved without the close cooperation of all the European partners.
