Single Hit Multi Functional Machining

Objectif

Objectives and content

The overall objective of the project is to define the behaviour of composite connections to enable development of a composite technology product to be applied to both new and existing structures for offshore and onshore applications. A composite connection is defined here as a joint comprising a grout-filled (or concrete filled) hollow steel member to which is attached one or more other structural members. Composite connections offer considerable scope for innovative design in new structures and an extremely technically efficient and cost effective method for strengthening and/or repair of existing structures. Substantial increases in static strength, fatigue strength and impact resistance can be utilised in many structural types.
The primary objectives of this project are firstly, to develop composite connection technology to the extent that it can be applied as an efficient and cost effective alternative to other forms of construction and secondly, to provide a means by which the technology may be applied to existing structures for strengthening and/or repair.

The proposed scope of work to achieve the above is comprehensive and includes the following key activities:
- Conduct a test program of numerous connections utilising open and/or hollow sections of varying joint types (T. X, K) under static and fatigue loading.
- Perform a parametric study with finite element (FE) analyses of composite connections, which will be calibrated against the test data, to generate information for a broad geometric and parameter range.
- Determine and explore other possible uses and scenarios.
- Develop deployment and design procedures for design of new structures and strengthening and/or repair of existing structures.

The project will:
- define most useful process combinations and associated functional specifications, based on existing definition and user requirement studies, and specify appropriate processing modules and workstation configurations.
- research and develop technologies, methods and techniques which will enable the processes required for complete manufacture of a broad range of small to medium machined parts to be readily configured and integrated on a single workstation capable of completing each part at a single setting in lot sizes as low as one.
- Implement appropriate modules and configure/reconfigure prototype MFM workstations, using the developed technologies, to prove the concepts and conduct necessary integrated research into technical and economic performance, operational issues, and support technologies .
The benefits include: for the users:
- improved accuracy/quality through reduced setting
- lower capital investment & indirect operating costs
- reduced throughput times (in the order of 75% reduction)
- improved response to market
for the suppliers:
- ability to offer high functionality at attractive prices (high value/low volume special machines are less special)
- ability to address new and potentially large market.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
