Noise reduction from textile machinery with active noise control

Objective

The European textile industry must bear the large amount
of the costs resulting from the exposure to dangerously
high noise levels of its employees. Such costs include
indemnification of employees suffering from occupational
hearing loss, installation of noise measurement and
reduction programmes, hearing protection, hearing checks,
and the costs associated with lower product quality
caused by noise annoyance and stress effects (ISO 9612).

The high levels of noise emissions in textile enterprises
are related to high production speeds and these high
levels cannot be adequately compensated for by the noise
reduction techniques currently used.
The high financial cost associated with high noise levels
reduces the competitiveness of the already shrinking
European textile industry.
This project therefore seeks to achieve a significant
decrease in noise levels produced by textile machinery.

Approximately 80% of textile employees suffering from
occupational hearing loss are weavers. Therefore in a
first instance this project will consist of an
investigation in order to establish the state of the art
in Active Noise Control (ANC) techniques already applied
to different kind of machines. This project will be the
first study about the application of an ANC device on a
weaving machine.

Active noise control will achieve noise reduction by
destructive interference of sound waves. This technique
will then be adapted to a lab set up loom and this
machine will be investigated in order to achieve optimum
noise reduction.

After a preliminary assessment of the technical and
economic potential of the lab set up, the target will be
the application of successful technique into one final
prototype loom. This loom should be economically viable
and provide the end user with a much quieter machine
producing high quality material at a faster speed than is
currently possible.

The preliminary assessment will be followed by the
modification and evaluation of 2 looms in the same way as
the prototype but under industrial conditions in a user's
weaving plant.
The final result will be a specified, detailed concept
for the design and construction of improved, noise
reduced weaving machinery. This new generation of weaving
machines will lift the state of the art of weaving
machinery to the high level required by European
Directives and improve working conditions.
These results will also have wider implications in
diverse fields.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
