Process optimization of laser welding for industrial application by on-line-control and evaluation

Objectif

The aim of the project is the development of a modular
designed on line control system for laser welding as a
tool for high quality production. Based on technologies
of thermal, optical and ultrasonic intererometric probes
the sensors and the controller unit will be developed.
Depending on the welding application and the quality
demands for the processed workpieces one or a couple of
different noncontact sensor devices will be used for
sensing the welding process. By successful completion of
the work programme the following effects are expected:

Realisation of a pre industrial prototype to obtain
"real time" data access to the weld quality allowing an
on line monitoring of the welding process for assuring
the workpiece quality.
Realisation at a laboratory scale of an on line control
system with a closed loop interaction to the laser
welding process, e.g. through the laser power, the
welding speed, the focal position or other actuators.
Analysis of requirements of various applications, not
realised in this project, to the performance of the
control system to assure a wide dissemination of the
modular system.
Integration of the modular on line control system into
production lines to reach a better quality and increase
the production efficiency in terms of less scrap, less
energy consumption, less crude materials input and
reduced production time.

Beginning the work of the project with evaluate the
industrial values for welding quality and the constraints
to the welding process for given applications of the
project partners, a correlation between welding process
parameter and occurring defects will be done by
theoretical modelling and experimentals. Out of given non
contact sensors (optical, thermal, ultrasonic) usable
sensors will be selected and developed on. With these
sensors the process signals during welding of reference
workpieces with defined defects will be measured. For
analysis of the measured signals hard and software for a
signal processor will be developed. The modular on line
control system will be tested as a monitoring system by
the project partner under industrial conditions and as a
closed loop device on a laboratory scale for one
application of the end user of the project.

Eight partners of three European countries make up the
consortium of the project. The multidisciplinarity of the
consortium is given by the different industrial branches
of aeronautics (AEROSPATIALE), heavy industry and power
plants (FRAMATOME) and shipbuilding applications
(customer of CETEMA) as the end user. The developer of
the sensor and signal processing devices also affiliates
to different industrial branches. SFIM ODS is a developer
and manufacturer of measurement techniques, CETEMA and
TLT are developer and manufacturer of components and
stand alone systems for laser material processing.
Depending on the demand of the project work, the
university institutes CRSA and Univ. BOURGOGNE and the
research organisation FhG ILT have been chosen by their
expertise in the field of work they will do within the
project.

As economic benefits of the project the productivity of
existing and future industrial laser welding lines
expected to increase in the range of 10 20 % by saving
crude material, reducing scrap and reducing energy cost.
The level of productivity, if changing conventional
welding techniques to on linecontrolled laser beam
welding technology would increase even more then the 10
20% by optimisation of the laser welding systems.

Programme(s)
