Environment Friendly & Hardness Enhanced Pvd CrN/TaN Superlattice C oating Technique as a Novel Alternative to Plated Hard Chromium

Objetivo



Fine scaled multilayer and superlattice structured TiN
and TiAIN based PVD hard coatings have shown increasingly
high potential to enhance hardness considerably. Hardness
values up to HK 5200 have been reported.

In the Exploratory Award project BRST CT95 0119 the
feasibility of CrN based superlattice structures has been
evaluated successfully with TaN, NbN and TiAIN as partner
materials. Hardness values between HK 3500 to 4000, with
critical load values of Lc 2 40N at a deposition
temperature of 200 C have been found. The introduction
of Ta and Nb was intended to improve the chemical and
corrosion properties in comparison to CrN whereas the
combination with TiAIN should sustain the high oxidation
resistance of CrN at temperatures up to 700 C .

In the industrial research project NEWCHROME it is
planned to explore this promising coating system using
the environmentally friendly combined arc/unbalanced
magnetron PVD technique. Fundamental research will be
combined with broad industrial development activities by
suppliers and end users. Diversification into combination
coatings:

NEWCHROME Al2 03;
NEWCHROME a Carbon
NEWCHROME MoS2,
as well as the investigation of conventional arc
technology as superlattice deposition method will be
considered. Comparison with existing techniques such as
sputtered CrN and CrC, Plasma CVD a Carbon as well as
electroplated hard chrome will be ensured. The
geographical location of the partners guarantees a broad
penetration into the European automotive, paper, textile,
cutlery and engineering components manufacturing
industry.
