Clean particleboard technology for recycled materials

Objetivo

When using natural resources environmental impacts areaways involved, but utilising renewable raw material such as wood or annual plants, the impacts are generally temporary and reversible in the long run. Traditional sources of raw material for the forest products industry are diminishing both in quality and availability. The manufacturing processes need to generate products of ever-higher quality of raw materials the quality of which is declining. The particleboard process produces strong, durable and low cost panels for furniture and building industry. New technology is needed to modify particleboard mills using round wood logs into an environmentally friendly modern plant, which utilises residues from other woodworking plants and recycled wood from other sources.

The industrial objectives for the new particle board technology will be: flexibility, ability to use 0 100% of residues of all kinds and recycled wood material;- reduction of environmentally harmful substances like dust and volatile organic compounds (VOC);- 20 30% reduction in energy consumption;- new process control technology flexible enough to adapt to different process and plant conditions;- emission control system to supervise the process and to provide feedback for the process.

In the existing processes the amount of recycled material and residues should be increased due to lack of virgin wood fibres. This could to be raised to 100% with proper technology. Current particleboard factories operate under new stringent environmental regulations. Especially VOCs originated from dryers, presses and power plants have become a major concern as there are very few efficient and economic ways of controlling the emissions. On the European level, particleboard factories account for energy consumption, which requires a power plant capacity of approximately 900 MW. By replacing widely used air based shifting technology by mechanical screens, significant energy savings are possible. Today's process control systems for particleboard factories are optimised for the product, not for the environmental aspects. There is not any existing control system that would continuously monitor and control the process in order to achieve the maximum efficiency and minimum emissions. The front end is very important for the particleboard process and the technology developed in this project will consist of: wet and dry side screening technology with separation functions for impurities existing in waste and recycled wood new type of flaking machinery to produce high quality flakes for the process new dryer technology for flakes in particleboard and OSB processes emission control system to prevent VOCs and dust;- new process control technology that utilises simulation, modelling, sensor fusion and fuzzy control;- development of oil free power generation technology for the particleboard process. The consortium comprises a supplier of particle boardlines (SDL), a manufacturer of industrial drying systems (FLAKT), and three manufacturers of particleboards(BYGGE), (MENDE) and (TURO) as the first users of the new technology. The work is supported by research organisation for emissions, (LUND) and research organisation for the particleboard technology (WKI).
