Friendly environmental treatments textiles finishing - integration plasma technology productive system

Objetivo

The main outcome of this project is an industrial scale prototype and associated processes for plasma treatments of wool and cotton tops.
The different development have been done according to the following schedule :
- plasma processes and post-treatment have been studied in tasks 1 and 2,
- industrial plasma prototype has been set up and optimised in tasks 3 to 6,
- market approaches and general assessment has been done in tasks 7 to 9 for the prototype and the materials.
Good practise for treatment of high water content fibres under low pressure are also available.
Scientific and technical objectives:

A plasma is an exited gas that can modified the surface of polyrners, in particular textiles surface. This dry proces which respects environment, can improve or substitute a lot of finishing operations and new materials, not accessibh by traditional process, can be produced.

Integration of this new clean technology in the productive line requires:
optimised new plasma treatments (for antibacterial and flame retardant properties),
totally new finishing chemicals adapted to plasma treated materials, increase the productivity up to 150 kg/h of plasma equipment, full automatisation and monitoring of the process.

Industrial objectives:

Through a first Brite EuRam project (BE P5646), the two end users have been convinced of the interest of plasma processes for tops
treatments. They are now ready to install this new technology in their productive lines, but the international market of plasma machines does not propose industrial equipment for tops. This project is the only way to develop plasma treatment of tops at industrial scale: all the best and complementary specialists in the fields of plasma and textile are present.

The objective of this Project is to bring onto market industrial plasma machine for wool and cotton tops treatment. Concerned wool market is irnportant: 25 000 tons (superwash) and 18 000 tons (shrink resistance) of wool tops are treated each year by chlorination in Europe (inducing high pollution), which correspond to the use of more than 80 machines of chlorination. CoKon market represent 1 297 000 tons (45.6 % of the total fibre market) and application fields of plasma technology will open new markets by creating new materials.
The main interest of plasma technology for textile finishing is the substitution of polluting operations by a clean process.

Approach:

This project has four main parts:
optimisation of high added value new plasma treatment for cotton and wool,
development of new finishes adapted to plasma treated wool,
conception of an industrial prototype,
market studies and exploitation plans for the plasma treated materials and for the plasma equipment.
