Pilot scale investigation of mechanical and optical applications of c-bn coatings

Objectif

Boron nitride is an outstanding material due to its extraordinary combination of exceptional mechanical, thermal, chemical, optical and electrical properties. Therefore, c BN, especially in form of thin films, is best suited for applications such as tribological coatings, and protective coatings for optical elements to name only few of them. The industry is highly interested in such a material that can be prepared by a clean technology, despite the present problems related to the adhesion of the layers and to the deposition rate. In order to meet the industrial requirements, we need to improve the adhesion of the films and to develop adequate equipment. This project therefore aims to overcome the problems to enable the use of c BN films for optical (e.g. infrared detection oncars) and high temperature mechanical (e.g. high speed cutting and hard working tools, elements of bearings) applications. To meet this aims, two different types of deposition techniques will be used, PVD and PECVD, each having unique advantages. For techniques, processes and measures will be developed to reduce stress and thus to improve adhesion. Also pilot-scale designs for industrial c BN deposition machines will be developed. They should allow the deposition of BN films for the different applications respecting the quality and the requirements fixed by end users. The final aim of the project is the specification of industrial machines for definite industrial productions as well as the establishment of quality standards for the coatings. To reach this aim, the project is based on the leading edge results on the basic principles of c BN deposition obtained, during a focused fundamental research BRITE / EURAM project (BE 4484 89), by two of the present partners.

This first project established clearly the conditions required to growth c BN films. The major results of this very successful work were: Establishment of a well defined parameter range for c BN deposition, irrespective of the method applied, which can be used as a basis for future machine design. Establishment of the influence of all major process parameters on the properties of c BN films. Proposition of possible measures to reduce the stress and to improve the adhesion of the films. In order to transfer the results of this fundamental work into machines and processes suitable for industrial production of high technology parts or products, four innovative aspects will be developed during the proposed project: development of measures to relieve stress and to improve adhesion development of semi pilot machines for the deposition of cubic boron nitride films suited for up scaling for integration in production lines and coating real parts, determination of optimal process technique (PVD, PECVD) for each type of application and finally specification of full-scale installations; establishment of testing methods and norms for the outstanding tribological properties of wear resistant super hard materials. The present consortium has the competence and the experience, which is equired to reach these aims. It involves: three research groups, each of which has already considerable experience in the synthesis of c BN layers, two manufacturers of deposition equipment, one for the PECVD and one for the PVD processes two end users for optical and mechanical applications. The end users will be directly involved in the conception of the machines and in the testing of the coating during the whole course of the project.

Programme(s)
