Resultados aprovechables

The goal of the BORATEC project was to further the use of the borehole radar method by providing appropriate instruments, together with innovative interpretation and survey methods. The results of the project surpass presents state of the art in borehole radar technology, effectively ensuring strong competitive advantages for the project partners. The project has resulted in four major categories of deliverables: theoretical knowledge, hardware, interpretation and survey techniques, and software. Theoretical investigation: This investigation was initiated to investigate the behaviour of the radar wave in the borehole in order to understand the problems reported by several users of the directional radar system. The task was successful and there is now a solid theoretical understanding of directional antenna problem. This knowledge facilitates better survey planning and interpretation. Hardware: Two new borehole radar systems have been developed one for applications in deep boreholes, one for near-surface applications. The system for deep operations has opened new markets by providing a radar that can work under hitherto impossible conditions. The system for shallow investigations has resulted in major cost savings for the user, at the same time providing higher quality results than previous radar systems. Interpretation and survey techniques: Several innovative applications of borehole radar were developed in the fields of engineering, hydrogeology, quarrying and environment. These provide new possibilities on the service market. Laboratory measurements and a new model of the complex electric properties of rocks provide tools for better planning and interpretation of borehole radar surveys. A new fluid exchange procedure was also developed that facilitate radar in deep gas storage caverns in salt. Software: A software package for interpretation of tomographic data was developed. Depending on the application the user can select between several different inversion algorithms: ordinary straight ray tomography, curved ray tomography, diffraction stack migration and diffraction tomography.
