Objective
Objectives and content
In the framework of this research, we propose to develop
devices for the selective detection of nitrogen oxides,
hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. In a previous BRITEEURAM project, we have developed original gas sensor
devices capable of providing information about gas
constituents for automotive applications. In order to
enhance the value of these results for automotive
applications, the main objective of this project is to
demonstrate the ability of the sensor to perform gas
analysis for engine exhaust gas systems, and its
potential in some engine applications (diesel and
gasoline).
The automotive fields to be covered by the project are>
on-board diagnostic of different catalysts (three-way,
DeNOx, NOx-trap)> control of the E.G.R. Gate > control
of NOx-trap and DeNOx catalysts > control of the diesel
injection > engine management.
Most of these applications have strategic importance to
meet the targets of envisaged legislative requirements,
concerning emissions and consumption.
The main research targets of this project can be
summarised as follows:
to define the conditions and operations for mass
production of the sensor as proposed in ECONOX (material
production for the sensing element)
to define and realise an industrial device in prototype
forms (encapsulation, associated electronics,
calibration, robustness)
to evaluate and analyse the response of the sensor
working in conditions typical for automotive applications
> to improve and condition the sensor with regard to
durability and ageing
to define an operational device for automotive
applications (NOX and HC).
The automotive constructors concerned with these problems
are investigating the application of different systems to
meet these foreseen problems. In order to provide sensor
systems with a large mass production at low cost, it is
of a strategic importance to fund research and
development works in this area through a European
strategy.
