Profiling spectrometry to simultaneously investigate the spatial distribution of temperature and chemical species in aircraft exhausts

Objectif

Objectives and content
AEROPROFILE is proposed as a basic research project, to
contribute to the intensive European efforts to
strengthen the technological, environmental and financial
standing of its aircraft industry. The general
escalation in concern on environmental issues, increasing
airtraffic coupled with world competition, indicates that
the European aeronautics industry should aim to take the
lead in technological and environmental advancements.
This project will contribute to this aim by developing a
profiling Fourier transform infrared (p-FTIR) capability
to characterise aircraft exhaust plumes, non-intrusively.
The technique will aim to be traceable to international
standards, and be capable of the simultaneous
characterisation of the 3-D distribution of the gaseous
species and temperature profile in the plume. To achieve
this, modifications to existing, proven FTIR equipment,
and analytical software developments will be made to
achieve the profiling capabilities required.
Furthermore, laboratory investigations will be made to
extend existing molecular databases to realistic
temperatures and species-type; and extensive calibration
procedures developed to improve the quality of the
measured data and resulting analyses. Finally, a
measurement campaign has been planned within the project
to test the p-FTIR and calibration facilities and to
validate the analytical software required assessing the
characteristics of the exhaust plumes. This campaign
will involve a full range of engine sizes, types and
conditions, culminating in an in-flight measurement
campaign to specifically investigate the plume
characteristics under take-off, climb, landing, and
cruise conditions.
AEROPROFILE aims to assist the European aeronautics
industry in leading the world in environmental assessment
technologies for now and in the future. This will be
achieved, by developing non-intrusive, accurate and
rugged capabilities for the full 3-D characterisation of
aircraft engine exhaust plumes, under a variety of
conditions. In this way, AEROPROFILE will contribute to
the research areas 3A: Aeronautics Technologies: 3A.4.1
and 3A.4.2: Environmental Technologies, Technologies for
Low Pollutant Emissions. The proposed consortium
partners for this project, brings together some of the
leading experts in:
FTIR design, construction and application, as well as
high resolution molecular spectroscopy (DLR from
Germany);
Infrared prediction modelling and analyses, and leading
airframe manufacturer (BAe from the United Kingdom);
State-of-the-art calibration capabilities (RISO from
Denmark);
Aero-engine manufacturer and testing (ARA from Italy);
Data acquisition, handling and analyses (UBirm) from
the United Kingdom). In addition, the consortium
partners are brought together from 4 different countries,
covering northern and southern EU states.
In summary, this project brings together a strong
consortium partnership with extensive and varied
expertise, which will enhance EU co-operation as well as
the European aeronautics industry.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
