Advanced Positive Electrode for Large Capacity Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) Batteries for Hydrid Vehicles

Objectif

Objectives and content
Ni-MH is presently the most promising battery system for
electric and hybrid vehicle propulsion in the mid term.
Substitution of Cd in alkaline batteries by metal
hydrides with a higher specific capacity, and present
efforts world-wide to improve the high rate performance
of metal hydride electrodes, make imperative the
development of new active materials and electrode designs
for positive nickel electrodes with improved capacity and
power density. For that reason, the aim of this project
is the development of an improved capacity and high power
positive electrode for alkaline batteries based on a new
type of nickel hydroxide, which will be finally tested in
Ni-MH batteries for hybrid vehicles.
The basis to achieve the high capacity positive
electrodes is an irregular shaped nickel hydroxide with
high tap density (> 1.8 g/cm3) obtained by a nonpolluting technique and its modifications by the use of
other metallic ions, which can provide an improved
performance of the electrode in terms of active material
utilisation, charge efficiency at high temperature and
improved cycle life by avoiding swelling of the active
material (which is currently specially important in
highly loaded planar electrodes with porous substrates).
High rate performance of the electrodes will be based in
the use of high porosity fibre electrodes and the use of
certain additives in the active material formulation.
The development of a continuous mechanical process for
manufacturing positive electrodes will also present clear
advantages when compared with the sintered electrodes
used currently for high rate applications, in terms of
process cost and of an important reduction of polluting
effluents. On the other hand, structural and surface
studies of the materials and the electrodes will provide
a better knowledge of the electrochemical phenomena and
processes and the acquisition of criteria for the
election of the best material and electrode design for
each application. A 3 kWh Ni-MH battery 1 5Ah-200V) will
be manufactured and tested simulating in-vehicle
conditions to test the performance of the system. At the
end of the project, batteries with 80 Wh/kg and 180 Wh/kg
will be designed assembled and tested.
The Consortium comprises a battery developer and
manufacturer (Tudor), a developer and manufacturer of
nickel hydroxide (R.B.C.) an alkaline battery
manufacturer (Emisa) an expert in battery testing
(Catella Generics), a car manufacturer as end user (SEAT)
and research groups on electrochemistry (LEI-CNRS) and
solid state (U.Montpellier II).
