Polymerizable and Polymeric Surfactants in Emulsion Polymerization for Waterborne Coatings

Objetivo

Objectives and content
After the "Human Capital and Mobility" network CHRX 93
0159, on about the same subject, just ended on Dec 31
1996, a selection of reactive surfactants suitable for
emulsion polymerisation (based on maleic reactive groups)
has been done. Then surfactants lead to latexes with
better stability and film with improved performances.
The present project, with the same co-ordinator, has a
double purpose:
Scale up the production of these selected surfactants,
and also the production of film forming latexes, in
amount large enough for them to be formulated and tested
in end-use of water borne paints, adhesives, paper
coatings, printing inks and textile coatings.
This work will be done chiefly by industrial partners
specialised in the concerned domains.
Continue the basic studies in the field, to confirm the
potential interest of some other surfactants already
prepared by the Network, and develop entirely new
surfactants and new methods to produce them, as well as
polymeric surfactants. These basic studies will be
carried out chiefly by the participants of the previous
Network who are willing to continue to cooperate and also
by a laboratory from the University of RIGA in Latvia,
working on maleate derivatives.
These new surfactants will, hopefully, might be selected
in further steps of the program for scaling up processes
and testing in end-uses, on very severe criteria.
Explore the capability and possible benefits in new
related heterogeneous processes such as microemulsion and
miniemulsion and also the very new system of controlled
radical polymerisation; which, up to now have never been
applied successfully to emulsion polymerisation being
limited to solution polymerisation.
The surfactants will be chiefly SURFMERS (possibly
TRANSURFS or INISURFS), anionic or non-ionic with
polymerizable groups such as maleic (possibly acrylic or
styrenic), hydrophilic sequences of polyethylene oxide,
and hydrophobic sequences of either hydrocarbons or
polyoxiranes (propyl, butyl). Some polymeric
surfactants, prepared independently out side of the
emulsion process will be also tested. Scaling up of
surfactants will be carried out by A KC ROS.
The film forming copolymers to be studied will be mainly
acrylics such as Styrene-Butyl-Acrylate-Acrylic acid or
Styrene-Butadiene Acrylic acid, to be prepared by AKZO
Resin, and Vinylic copolymer such as Vinylacetate VEOVA,
or Vinylacetate-ethylene, to be prepared by VINAMUL.
The application will be paints and printing inks (AKZO
Coatings), paper coatings (SCA GRAPHICS), adhesives and
textile coatings and other possible application
(VINAMUL).
In total, eleven partners among then 6 basic research
laboratories with 6 thesis (or post doc) students to be
trained and 5 Industrial partners.
