Civil Aircraft manufacturers rely strongly upon
Computational Fluid Dynamic based design tools, to
deliver cost effective, world class aerodynamic designs.
European industry has invested significant amounts of
money to ensure that it maintains its position as world
leader in this area.
All of Europe's aircraft manufacturers have a
productionised compressible inviscid flow capability,
allowing the computation of the transonic flow around
complex full aircraft configurations to be carried out in
a routine manner. Similarly, industry has invested in
the next generation of design tools, namely those based
upon the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)
equations. Though much time and effort has been directed
towards the assembly of these RANS based systems, they
have still to be fully deployed within the industrial
design framework. This is primarily due to concerns over
their validity, robustness and cost effectiveness.
The aim of this "Industrial Research" project is to
enhance the levels of robustness, efficiency and validity
of industrial three-dimensional viscous flow simulation
tools, such that full industrial deployment of RANS
technology can be achieved within a few years.
Specifically, the objectives can be summarised as
follows:
Robustness: to reduce the failure rate of RANS systems
to zero.
Efficiency: to reduce the current 25 hour CPU
requirement for a 3 million cell calculation to 12-15
hours.
Validity: to improve prediction of key design
parameters to within 1-2% compared with experiment, as
against 5-10% today.
Whilst the savings achieved during an aircraft design
process are difficult to quantify, it is estimated in
this proposal that the deployment of RANS methods will
reduce wind tunnel testing and lead to a 7.5Mecu saving
per year across the consortium.
These objectives will be achieved from the starting point
of a set of existing state-of-the-art industrial codes.
These codes will be validated on prescribed, industrially
relevant, test cases and conclusions drawn as to observe
levels of accuracy, reliability and efficiency. These
test cases include some of the largest and most demanding
calculations attempted to date. New technology will be
developed and implemented within the baseline methods.
The resulting methods, containing the new technology,
will be re-evaluated on the same prescribed test cases.
By comparing the results of the re-evaluation with the
initial baseline evaluation data, the benefits of the new
technology will be quantified. Any remaining obstacles
to the implementation of RANS will become clear.
The assembled consortium comprises 6 of Europe's major
aircraft manufacturers plus 5 national research
institutes. The project duration is 30 months. The
manufacturers are all fully committed to the development,
deployment and exploitation of CFD based design tools.
The research institutes have a proven track record of
developing and delivering world class, industrially
focussed, CFD technology.
