Development of a computer based system for enhanced sea-keeping and structural ship design

Objectif

Objectives and content:

The proposal aims at developing and validating enhanced mathematical models and numerical methods for accurately predicting, in a cost-effective manner, the motions and loads of a vessel under different sea conditions. The developed methods will be subsequently integrated into a new computer based system for design of ship hull forms with superior sea keeping facilities and accurate prediction of sea loads for structural design and analysis. More specifically, the project intends:? To develop advanced finite element based CFD procedures for transient hydrodynamic analysis of a ship subjected to unsteady seaway excitations. The solution of the non-viscous type of flow will be attempted first, using both at three dimensional panel methods for potential flows and a finite element method for solving Euler equations for in viscid rotational flows. Viscous effects will be subsequently incorporated by means of adequate boundary-layer models and more complex domain decomposition based Navier-Stokes models.? To couple the developed CFD codes with a generalised FE structural design code with the aims to accurately predicting the dynamic structural response resulting from the ship motions in waves. Rigid body solution will be considering first using a generalised dynamic scheme. The effect of the elastic structural response will be also taken into account in a second step.? To integrate the coupled fluid-structure interaction model into a new computer based ship design system for improved hull form design with respect to sea keeping performance and structural reliability.? To validate the theoretical-numerical methods and computer algorithms by systematic comparison with experimental data resulting from ship model tests performed at the participating towing tank facilities.? To implement and to test the efficiency and reliability of the developed computer based ship design system at the end-user premises using practical industrial test cases.? To define a strategy and procedural methodology for the internal and external exploitation of the developed new ship design system for improving sea-keeping performance and enhanced structural reliability.

The partnership groups a balance of three ship builders and designers in Spain, Portugal and Greece, a mayor towing tank facility in France, a software company in Spain specialised in CFD and structural analysis, two universities in Greece and Germany specialised in ship design and structural dynamic analysis, respectively and a research centre in Spain specialised in developing finite elements methods for fluid flow and structural problems. Two of the partners are SME's (partners 5 and 7). The partnership has the necessary complementarity of skills and experience to carry out successfully the planned research. The partners expect to produce the "internal" and "external" exploitable versions of the system within 6 months and 18-month safter the completion of the project respectively. It is expected that by using the computer system to be developed in the project, the cost of prototype manufacturing and towing tank testing of ship hulls could be reduced by a factor of four. The overall design cycle of a hull could be reduced by30%. A 10% reduction in fuel consumption due to enhanced hydrodynamic. BE97-4342

Programme(s)
